IPO/Schutzhund/IGP

Following another name change the dog sport is now called IGP (Internationale Gebrauchshund Prufung)

PO - Internationale Prufung Ordnung (previously known as Schutzhund)

IPO is a dog sport that was developed in Germany in the early 1900`s as a breed suitability test for German Shepherd Dogs. The test would determine if the dog displayed the appropriate traits and characteristics of a proper working German Shepherd Dog. The main body of the sport has 3 titles IPO1, IPO2 and IPO3 each award gaining in complexity with additional exercises and intensity. Before a dog can compete for IPO1 he must first pass the BH (Begleithundprufung). This test consists of a preset obedience pattern that is carried out both on and off lead, together with the motion sit and down, completed with a long down stay. Part 2 of the BH consists of a potential series of exercises designed to test the dogs sureness around strange people, strange dogs, traffic and loud noises. Any dog that exhibits fear, distractability or aggression cannot pass the test, thus cannot progress to IPO1.

IPO CONSISTS OF 3 PHASES

Each dog and handler are referred to as a team, and it is this team that is judged on performance and precision during all phases  and titles

1 - TRACKING - the tracking phase tests not only the dogs scenting ability, but also its mental soundness and physical endurance. A track is laid across a field with articles laid along the way. After  a period of time the dog is directed to follow the track and to locate any article that has been laid. The length, complexity, number of articles and age of each track varies for each title.

2 - OBEDIENCE - the obedience phase is compiled of different exercises and done in pairs with one dog working and the other doing a long down under distraction. IPO1, 2 and 3 have a precision based heeling routine, sit and down out of motion dumbbell retrieves and with each title exercises are added and  all exercises increasingly scrutinised.

3 - PROTECTION - the protection phase consists of a number of exercises, again increasing in complexity with each title. The dog has to be under total control at all times, performing searching bark and hold and of course biting the sleeve of a well protected helper when commanded. The dog must out on command or will be dismissed and show the courage to engage the helper and temperament to obey the handler whilst in a high state of drive. Any dog that shows fear, lack of control or inappropriate aggression will be dismissed.
